  • Do you think I'm right?

I have this family in Islington in 1881

James NEAL Head M 36 Carman Islington, Middlesex
Susan NEAL Wife M 29 Islington, Middlesex
    Amelia NEAL Dau 12 Islington
Florence NEAL Dau Female 10 Islington
    Jane NEAL Dau 6 Islington
    Hannah NEAL Dau 5 Islington
    Helen NEAL Dau 4 Islington
Mary A. NEAL Dau 4 Islington
    John NEAL Son 10m Islington

Amelia marries in 1888 and Florence in 1890. The rest of them completely vanish.

It looks like James died Sep qtr 1882 Islington aged 39.

And then there's this family in Islington in 1891, which is a very close match.

Charles Raymond head 40 gas fitter Islington
    Susan wife 40 Islington
Mary Ann dau 19 wood chopper Islington
Jennie dau 16 wood chopper Islington
Hannah dau 15 wood chopper Islington
Ellen dau 14 wood chopper Islington
    John son 10 St Pancras
    Charles son 2m St Pancras

I can't find Charles and Susan on the 1881 or a marriage for a Charles Raymond to a Susan. Plus Susan's maiden name was Susan Mary Ginn and there's a death for a Susan M Raymond in 1915 Islington aged 65.

Has she shacked up with Charles?

    Good morning Asa

I always think you're right, lol!

Off to investigate what looks a likely premise.

RG13; Piece: 24; Folio: 81; Page: 44. Charles Raymond, Susan and Charles junior, still in Islington.

My thoughts are that Helen/Ellen and Jane/Jennie are plausible, but Mary Ann has aged 15 years in 10 years which makes me a little uncomfortable.

Oh I forgot to mention that bit. I think Mary Ann's age and order might be an error on the 1881. I'm fairly sure Hannah is Hannah Phillis b 1875 Islington and married Frederick Dawes in 1896 Islington and living in Barnsbury in 1901. She doesn't have a twin in the birth indices.

Does that sound a bit like straw-clutching?

              Hmmmm.

I can't find a marriage for Charles Raymond before 1900 either. I think you need to retain a questionmark besides this lot.

I wonder if any of the younger girls married under name Raymond instead of Neal?

No I didn't have any luck with Charles either - he could be the one in the army in 1881...

Not coming up with anything conclusive for the younger girls under either name. There's a possible marriage for a Jennie Raymond but she's a few years older.

I'm going to trawl the army records for as many of the family as I can and see if I can come up with anything under next of kin and so on.

Couldn't Mary Ann be Charles' daughter?

I thought that, but have been unable to find Charles prior to his being with Susan.

I hadn't thought of that, OC. Like Nell, I just can't find anything on Charles before he appears on the 1891. I had no luck with the army records or with any of the younger daughters.

My connection is Florence Neal married my great great uncle. She seems to have become the matriach of the family and was present at half of the family deaths so I wanted to learn more about her own background.

You'd think at some point the family would realise people keep dying around her and stop inviting her for tea!!

                                  HI Asa and all

Maybe this is your Charles Raymond in the 1881 census

shown as Chas Raymon* Artiz Fitter bn St Lukes but living in St Marys Islington they have him down as married but after looking at the image I'm so sure.

                                    Hi Wendy

Thanks very much for having a look. He looked very possible but I think he's the one born in Shoreditch and living in Islington in 1891 married to Ann - he's also a fitter.
