  • GGG Grandfather Early

    Hi,

I am trying to trace the parents of my GGG Grandfather who was born in St Mary Newington to Mary Ann (maiden name unknown). Father said to be Nicholas Early. He was born in 1825 and had a twin called Benjamin.

Can't find a trace of the father.
I would also like to know where my ggg grandfather is buried.
He was a china glass dealer so would like to know more information about this as well.

    Kind regards
    Zena

Can you give us the name of your ggg grandfather - and year and place of birth if known.

      Hi Zena, and welcome.

I take it your GGGgrandfather was Nicholas Early?

I've found the entries for him and Benjamin on the IGI, but there's no father listed, only mother Mary Ann Early, which suggests that they were illegitimate.
A Mary Ann Early married a Christopher Young at Saint Mary, Newington in 1831 - I wonder if it's the same person?

Have you found any of them on the censuses?

You may find a little more information on the original parish registers (the vicar occasionally entered the name of the putative father).

Aha - presume we are talking about Nicholas and Benjamin Early, shown on the IGI as being born 29th July 1825, christened 28 August 1825, mother's name given as Mary Ann Early, no father named.

In 1851 there's a Nicholas Early (mistranscribed as Emily), 25, unmarried, assistant in china warehouse, living as a boarder at St. Mary's, Newington. In the same household there's a Mary Ann Kincard aged 60, annuitant - maybe his mother?

Ah, I think I've found them in 1841.

Ignore the marriage I mentioned above: there's also the following marriage on the IGI:

              MARY ANN EARLY
              Marriages:
              Spouse: JOHN JACKSON
Marriage: 14 JAN 1829 Holy Trinity, Newington, Surrey, England

              In 1841, there's a John Jackson, porter, 60, living in Newington with a Mary, 40, Eliza 18, Benjamin 15, Nicholas 15, George 14, Emma 4, Sophia 3 and William 1.

The 1841 census doesn't show relationships, and all the surnames are given as Jackson, but I bet these are your Benjamin and Nicholas Early.

This looks like the reference for his death:

                Name: Nicholas Early
                Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824
                1896 Jul-Aug-Sep Age at Death: 72
                Strand 1b Page: 414a

If he died in London, there are a variety of places where he could have been buried. It won't necessarily be near where he died, as most London churchyards were full up by the 1840s/50s. That's why there are so many cemeteries built further out. Of course he might have been buried in a place where another family member was already interred.
