  • Occupation on 1841 census please

Could someone have a look at the occupation of James (aged 16)

    He's on page 7 ... line 9
It looks like either Match Maker or Watch Maker ?

    On the next census he's a Painter and 1861 he's a Plumber

I would say it is Watch Maker.

The enumerator's "M" starts with an upward stroke - see the name Mary further down the page - also the M and A of Mary flow together, unlike the first two letters in the occupation.

      Thanks Elaine
That was my first thought, but Watch Maker to Plumber seemed a little odd

I was reading up about this recently as OH has watchmaking ancestors. Apparently many "watchmakers" didn't make the watch from start to finish, but just did specific bits. Maybe your chap's eyesight went and made the work too difficult?

OH had an ancestor that finished watches for a watchmaker, though he is described as watchmaker in records. Perhaps your chap was working for another watchmaker and lost his job for some reason?

I guess both occupations involve working with metal so he may have moved on when the opportunity came up to better himself.

I wouldn't have thought at the age of 16 he'd have been 'doing' a whole watch ... sounds incredibly skilled

Looking on other censuses ... 1861 he's employing 2 men.
Next he's a Plumber and Builder and, oh dear in 1881 he's "Builder out of business" can't read what it says underneath

Rachel if he were "out of business" you may find some bankruptcy notices or court actions?

My goldsmith/watchmaker aged about 25 (took over the business from his father) was in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings when he had a most convenient burglary of his shop.

Heather and Uncle John .... where would I look ?

This chap, I believe, was gt gt gran's eldest sibling.

So finding out more about him would be interesting but not desperately important. It looks as if he was in Yorkshire in 1891, in lodgings and widowed
Wonder what he was doing so far from home ..... think I'll have a meander through the census images in case any surnames ring a bell
