  • Help needed to find ELIZABETH LEADER in 1861 census in London

Just tidying up loose ends as I put tree on FTM.

Couldn't find ELIZABETH BUTCHER after what I think is her marriage to RICHARD LEADER. I have all stuff on her family, it is just her I am trying to track.

This is what I have on Elizabeth:

BIRTH: IGI: 23/9/1833 Chr: 21/4/1833 Old Church, St Pancras.
    Fa: John Mo: Elizabeth

MARRIAGE: to RICHARD LEADER 15 JUL 1855 ?
Old Church, St Pancras. Can’t find either of them in 1861 census.

DEATH: BMD Death: Elizabeth Leader b1832 death reg 1870 Oct q Marylebone Vol 1a p395

1841 census John Butcher b?1786. Storm Sawyer

Address: Norfolk St Civil par: St Pancras.
    Hundred: Ossulstone (Holborn Division) Middx

1851 Elizabeth Butcher b1833 St Pancras. Daughter. Milliner
    Household
Eleanor Butcher b1838 St Pancras. Milliner (says sister but more likely to be her niece)
Elizabeth Butcher b1788 Southgate, Middx. Mother
John Butcher b1786 Buckingham, Bucks. Head. Father. Stone Mason

Address: 28 Albion St Civil par: Islington.

As it looks like she died in 1870, am only looking for her (and husband) in
1861England Census. Anyone else want to have a go?

Going off to have me tea now. Back in 1 hr or so. Thanks. Liz

I've tried a sprinkling of the usual wildcard and less-is-more attacks, without success, I'm afraid.

The only one I can find is an Elizabeth Leader married to a William So probably isn't her I'm afraid. But anyway.

      1861 Census
      Leader, Elizabeth Aged 27
      Pancras, London, Middlesex
      RG09, piece 109, folio 19 page 38

      William is a Grocers Assistant.

      daughters: Alice, Martha and Grace!

Leader will be one of those names totally mistranscribed - can't you just see it.

In 1861 a lot of areas of London are missing:

            (from the Wiki)

            1861 Census - Missing Districts
            Completely Missing
145 - All of Islington East, sub to Islington District, Middlesex

They were in Islington West in 1851, so I suppose they might have moved a few streets?!

Thanks Merry. That could explain it.

Note that (if it is the right person) Elizabeth Leader's death reg in Marylebone in 1870.

Are you sure of the marriage,in the 1851 census there's a Richard and Elizabeth Leader,in Middlesex..

In 1859 there's a of death as well for an Elizabeth in the same area.

Hi Alun. I checked out that one yesterday I think and Elizabeth's birthplace was wrong.

This is a very tricky line of my tree - I am going to have to wait until the 1911 census comes out in the hope my pat. grandmother's birthplace is a bit more legible than in the 1901 census.

Not buying any certs this far down in the Butcher line till that has happened.

However, am pretty sure from certs bought back to her parents' marriage (another Elizabeth Butcher and Wm Hickman) that I am on the right track.

Was hoping if found the Leaders with right birthplace for Elizabeth in 1861, it was another piece in the jigsaw done. However, she is not central so not too important.

                  Thanks again. Liz
