    It looks like Irshman...Civ...ill, to me !
    Joan died in July 2020.

      Margaret, I'm sure the first word is Postman - the second looks like Civill?

        I think you could be correct about the postman. He was a telegraph messenger in 1891.

            Just realised - that second bit is a later addition... like they add some basic category where the original is more complicated ("dresser" becomes "domestic servant").

            Lower down, the same handwriting has "Wash" against "Laundress".

              Maybe it's an abbreviation for civil servant? (Not sure if a postman would be classed as one)

                  Spot on. The Post Office remained part of the Civil Service until after BT was made a nationalised industry.
