  • FTM...importing a gedcom

I don't seem to be able to find my "import" button!

Can anyone talk me though please?
    Just Mandy

    Mandy,
From the FILE menu, click on OPEN and then find the gedcom file that you wish to open. You should then be talked through a series of steps, like giving the file a new name etc. - it should be self explanatory.
Shout if you need any more help.

Elaine...it just says it doesn't recognise the type of file I'm trying to open...and the other gedcom I saved doesn't even come up as an option to open!

I knwo I must be being thick!

What is the file extension of the file you are trying to open?
        Does it end in .ged

You cannot import a PAF file into FTM.
Where has the PAF file come from - has it been sent to you - in which case the easiest thing would be to ask the person who sent it to export a gedcom file fromthe PAF program.
Alternatively, you could download PAF, from FamilySearch.org - Family History and Genealogy Records (free to download) - open the file in that and export your own gedcom which you could them import into FTM.

If the file is from an early version of PAF then you might be lucky; early files might work in FTM, later ones certainly don't and you would need to convert to a GEDCOM format first. See the link below

Can you open the file in the PAF program and then export a gedcom from it, which you can then open in FTM.
Mary in Italy has put together some very useful PAF instructions in the wiki which might be useful

There is an option to export to a whole variety of types of files...

                    PAF 5, 4, 3, 2.1-2.3

ancestral file or pedigree resounrce file
                    temple ready for DOS
                    temple ready for windows
                    paf for palm handhelds
                    other gedcom 5.5

                    does that help??
