  • Why the "Mrs" ? Help please.

I have a marriage of Mary Ann Cutts in Great Yarmouth in 1826.
The IGI says "Mary Ann Mrs Cutts". Could this mean that she was a widow.
I have seen this before but cannot remember what the explanation-if any-was.

It's a submitted entry, so I wouldn't take any notice of it, personally. It could mean anything.

Although it is submitted sks did find it for me as well on the marriage cd somewhere in the dim and distant past I seem to remember. It is so frustrating as this is my direct line and everything disappears before 1840.
I personally blame the Norfolk accent :(

There's an extracted marriage for the same date and place, which I found by putting in the grooms name:

        ROBERT BATTS
        Marriages:
        Spouse: MARY ANN CUTTER
Marriage: 05 NOV 1826 St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.

So the bride would appear not to be a Cutts at all, though you might still need to check this out with the PRs.

From BVRI index. Wife previously married would account for the Mrs.

          BATTS, Robert Marriage
          Wife: Mary Ann CUTTER
Marriage Date: 5 Nov 1826 Recorded in: Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
          Collection: St Nicholas
          Wife previously married

Perhaps you could find some likely Cutter baptisms with Mary Ann as mother and hopefully get her first husband's name that way and see if you can find the first marriage and death/burial of husband #1.

Having checked through my notes-in several different books of course-I see that I have seen the entry from the Parish records. There is no reference to the "Mrs" and she is definitely Cutts and not Cutter and he is Robert Balls.

Apart from the fact he is mentioned as father to one of their two sons(in the parish record) he is never heard of again and Mary Ann disappears after 1841 :(
In fact by then she is calling herself Ann, as is every other Balls in Yarmouth at that time!

I suppose she may have been widowed and remarried.

              Thanks for the suggestions.
