  • how can i find out who she was?

i have just bought my grandfathers birth cert - his name and DOB are correct. he doesnt have a father listed only mother - not a problem (for me anyway, but maybe another skeleton in cupboard and why he has forbidden me to do the tree).

all i have on the lady listed as mother is Lily May Powell, agricultural labourer of mildenhall road little port ely. this is in 1915. i have looked at 1901 census but there isnt anyone of that name in the area.

as far as i have been told, his family ALL came from the ely area.

any ideas as to how i can find info on lily?

    thanks

There is a Lily Mary Powell Sep qtr 1894 Tendring, Essex which is the nearest to Ely I could find on FreeBMD. Two others are Chelsea and Pembroke between 1890 and 1900.

that is a good possibility margaret, it would mean she was 19 when she had grandad (not that theres anything wrong with that).

i still dont know how i can proove it is her though.

i've just looked at the image and the address is MILDENHALL ROAD, LITTLEPORT. her father is a yardman on the farm.

A Lily Buck married a Thomas Powell Dec qtr 1903, Peterbro.
Tried to see if he'd died by 1915, hence the lack of father's name on Birth cert. but got timed out, going back to try again

Possible Newmarket March qtr 1914 but aged 55yrs.

Inconsiderate of them to wait 2 yrs after the census to marry!!

You are saying she was unmarried, aren't you?

If she's supposed to be from Ely then I would be looking hard at this one:

                      Births Sep 1897
                      Powell Lilian M Ely 3b 520a

and this could be a marriage for the same person.

                      Marriages Dec 1927
                      POWELL Lily M OVERALL Ely 3b 1428

well i believe her to be unmarried in 1915 when grandad was born as there is no father listed.

The spouse at the 1927 marriage is Thomas H Overall.

                          Lily's death:

                          Lily May Overall

If she was married but her husband wasn't named as the father, then her married and maiden name would normally still be quoted.

Would the name Overall mean anything to anyone who would talk about it??

i dont know. i've never heard of it in the family (but as i said in 1st post, is this another skeleton? and why i have been told i am forbidden to do the tree)

i dont even know if there are any brothers and sisters etc.

grandad has always gone on about "how important the family name is etc" so i was quite supprised to see no father listed.

I've just had a look at the GRO page for the birth and she is actually listed as Lily M not Lilian M (that's what FreeBMD has)

I can't find her on the census yet. I notice the birth reg has a a suffix after the page number.........hope there's nothing "funny" about it.

Going to have another look at the 1901.

i do think this is the BIG SKELETON and we may find out that people are not who we think (or the cert says)!

                                    Oh, it is this one:

                                    RG13; Piece: 1547; Folio: 73; Page: 7

Says Burnt Fen Suffolk for place of birth. But Burnt Fen turns out to be immediately to the east of Littleport which is a parish and large village, in a fenny part of the Isle of Ely. (In Cambs, not Suffolk)
