I can't find an Ellen Dale to fit. Was it a double-barrelled surname?

Have you got her parents' names? or is that what you're after?

It's possible the 1854 certificate says she was widowed. Potting wasn't a particularly healthy occupation and thomas could have died.

No other Ellen Dales in 1851 born anywhere near Stoke.

It looks as though she might be in the "wet" (unfilmed) part of the 1851 census, which isn't on Ancestry.

I found these 3 hits on Family History Online:

                1. Ellen DALE found in Liverpool 1851 Census index 1 entry in Lancashire during 1851 details £0.06

                2. Ellen DALE found in Unfilmed 1851 Census 1 entry in Lancashire during 1851 details £0.10

                3. Mary Ellen DALE found in Unfilmed 1851 Census 1 entry in Lancashire during 1851 details £0.10

I wouldn't be surprised if your Ellen is the second one (assuming she was already in Lancashire).

What on earth are wet bits of the census Mary?

Incidentally, the only hit for her on Ancestry is that marriage record.

"The Wet Census" is the name given for part of the 1851 census taken in the Manchester area - it got water damaged and until very recently was impossible to read. Lots of people call it the Wet Bit, me included!

Manchester Family History Society have done some painstaking restoration work on this and it is only available as pay per view, not on Ancestry.

I have found no less than four of my missing families on this restored census.

There is an Ellen Dale aged 26, born Biddulph, Staffs, living with parents Peter and Maria in Droylsden.

Biddulph isn't all that far from Stoke.

That looks very likely Mary as Stephen was in Droylsden in 1851. I am not subscribed to Ancestry so can't look at the record

Thanks Mary. Isn't it typical just as I let my subscription lapse I get a contact from someone who wants more info on Ellen. I had only found Ellen on the census after she got married.

I've found Peter Dale and family, still in Droylsden, in 1861, but Ellen isn't with them. This time they're all shown as born in Tunster, Staffs.

Haven't found them in 1841 yet.

Tunster could be a mishearing of Tunstall.
