    I wondered what Henry J Mattey was employed as What do you think it says? - how dare they put a cross over it

    I would say "Cornish ring maker", but there probably isn't such a thing!

        I'm sure it says cornish ring maker. Didn't get anything from Googling that phrase but Cornish ring gave some results about cornish gold.

        On the other hand perhaps its a mining item? Where abouts in the country was he?

        Ooooh - just thought is a cornish ring something to do with plumbing bit and bobs?

            Hmmm ... OH says its nothing to do with plumbing!! :o

            He favours jewellry. This is Birmingham I think? He recons someone who worked in brass (as he did on the 1891 census) could turn his hand to jewellery. Cornish rings seem to be a special sort of engraved ring.
