    Farmer
    Fletcher
    Gardener
    Goldsmith
    King (lol does that count??!)

And none of them did the right job!

Baker, Bishop, Bowler, Bones (but no Surgeons!), Butcher, Butler. Carpenter, Carter, Cook, Cooper, Crook (several of them!!! LOL!), Cutler, Dean, Driver, Dyer, Fletcher, Foreman, Fryer, Hunter, King, Knight, Laird, Major, Mason, Miller, Purser, Sherriff, Skinner, Smith, Taylor, Turner, Weaver and Wright.
And not one of them followed the occupation that gave them their name.

                    well, you did ask...

                    the rarer ones
Armorer/Armourer - yes, the original one (13/14th century) probably was; after that, in my line they were mostly yeoman farmers.
                    Chancellor - definitely not!

others- mostly I only know about 18th & 19th C, and none of those had the right job.
                    Barber
                    Butcher
                    Cooper
                    Fletcher
                    Glover
                    Mercer
                    Saddler
                    Smith LOL (tons of them!)
                    Taylor
                    Wright

can I have Harper too? no musical connection afaik

I've a lot there are/were Common - does that count

I have a lot more than I expected.

                          Baker
                          Barber

                          Cartwright
                          Chamberlain
                          Chandler
                          Coleman
                          Cooper
                          Crew
                          Fletcher
                          Fryer

                          Hind
                          Inman
                          King
                          Knight
                          Leadbeater
                          Mason
                          Miller
                          Nurse
                          Roper
                          Seneschal
                          Smith
                          Spencer
                          Taylor
                          Ward
                          Warden
                          Webster
                          Wright

None of them did those jobs, and like Merry, I have lots of butchers in my tree, but not a single Butcher. I also have hundreds of Inmans, but none of them were innkeepers.

I found a nice list of surnames based on occupations here:

Because my tree is predominantly Lancashire-based, most of the surnames in my tree are Lancashire place names, rather than occupational names.

There are also a few surnames which sound as if they OUGHT to be old occupations, such as Ollier (definitely Ollier, not Oliver) and Gleave.

I have very few patronymics, such as Johnson, Jackson etc.

I haven't got any names like that at all!

The nearest I get is Charman- who was a char woman, she lived at Charlwood too.
