I've been trying and trying to find John and Alice on the 1901 census, but I just can't find them. Have you already got them on that one, Wendy?

I don't think she can have, Kaie, or she would know where John (1876) might have been born.

*muses over how long John was a painter? In 1895 and in 1912??*

Was John b 1912 a twin? Not that this has anything to do with youw Q!! There was an Ivy Matthews registered for birth on the same page, same mum's maiden name.

I've looked at all the births and deaths for Matthews/Matthew/Mathews/Mathews from 1895-1901 in the district of Hull and all of those living are accounted for in other families in 1901.

I think there were two who died......

                          Births Dec 1899
Matthews John William Hull 9d 315

                          Deaths Dec 1899
                          Matthews John William 0 Hull 9d 210

                          Births Dec 1900
Matthews Hannah Elizabeth Hull 9d 298

                          Deaths Dec 1900
                          Matthews Hannah Elizabeth 0 Hull 9d 198

There's also this death for which I can't find a matching birth (but might have been born out of Hull of course).........

                          Deaths Mar 1899
                          MATTHEWS John William 1 Hull 9d 183

I was thinking if any of these belong to your couple (particularly the Dec 1900 death) there's always a possibility Alice and John would be at the same address in 1901, maybe badly transcribed or incorrectly entered or whatever.

Might it be worth making enquiries at Hull Reg Office?

Just doing the same for Sculcoates District....isn't that Hull-ish? Will take a lot longer as there's loads of births!

(is anywhere else classed as part of Hull?)

Right .....just found out John b1912 was a twin apparently but the twin didnt live long we think.............i also believe John and Alice may have had 5 children that didnt survive.x
I too cannot find them on 1901 census, but someone did find me who could have been them, but registered as Duffield.x
