  • grave or vault query.

my relation is buried outside the front of a church that says in this vault etc
is a vault just the same as a grave.
there are no steps or anything its rather odd.

I think the most simple form of vault is just a bricklined grave space...........so the grave is dug, but before the coffin goes in the insides of the grave are lined with brick. The coffin will be placed in the vault and a slab of stone or raised slab of stone placed over the top. The grave can later be reopened to accept another coffin (depending on depth) and no digging wil be required.

        Yes it's as Merry said

Some people had big fancy vaults almost like houses and others had the sort that just looks, to the rest of us, like a grave with a slab on top.

These sort were lined with bricks and concrete was put in the base then the coffin went in and the slab was placed on top. There was no earth thrown in so they weren't buried as such just entombed and if you lifted the slab off you could see the coffin.

Ooooh now that is strange because there doesn't appear to be any slab at all.

I wonder if it was filled in for some reason? Would someone at the church be able to tell you?

Also the position of a grave in a church yard means something..... I always forget who goes where :D but I'm sure being buried that close to the church meant something... I'll look through my files.

Do you mind me asking where the church is?

Given the last time the plot was used (1893) could the headstone have been moved to it's present position?

Perhaps the church would know, also they might have a register of where the grave plots where.

:o Just realised that Edward was the Parish Clerk for 43 years.... should have read properly :D

The church was only built in 1848 (55yrs before he died) so maybe this explains the burial so close to the church itself

                                Right off to dish up!

edward helped raise the money for the church and started the fund for the vicarage.
the vicar had to get a licence from the home secretary so he could be put there with his
                                  first wife.
he was well in with the church.

The stone looks beautifully easy to read.

I am wondering if it was moved, or maybe the original slab removed perhaps because it had become a tripping hazard?

How can you tell there isn't a slab?? Something other than grass should be under the chippings, so that could be the slab on top of the uppermost brick course.
