  • Windows Updates - Any Problems

    Last week I had a large Windows Update overall with download and configuring PC it took about twenty minutes.

    After reboot I could not get onto the internet first time ever with this PC. I decided to reboot again and then found that my Desktop and Google Home Page were like a jigsaw all mixed together.

    In desperation I did a system restore and that fixed the problem instantly but of course I have not got that large update on my PC. Has anyone else had problems.

    My friend with BTInternet tells that her desktop and email are now in a muddle and a neighbour says that his screen has changed.

      I had a problem after a windows update last week, I lost my desktop background and try as I might could not get it back. I did a system restore, which I could only do by turning off my norton as the sysem restore won't work with norton, I have vista and that doesn't always get on with norton :(. Ihave norton 360 and have never had a problem before.
      Then I couldn't get norton fully operational and had to phone their helpline. They had to uninstall my norton and reinstall with the latest version. I have to say they were very helpful and I think I got my moneys worth out of them !! My friend also had a problem, her laptop crashed after a windows update and she has xp. I'm a bit wary of updates now.

        Lesley, I am pleased it was not just happening to me ( I don't mean that I wish it to happen to anyone) but we all have Vista and I have Avast free version and that has gone on the blink. I have also got Adaware Free version and that does not seem happy.
        It may all be licensed software but the hardware is ours and no one should ruin it for us.
        Good luck hope all your PC problems sort themselves out soon.

              These type of problems with updates have always been possible, as history could tell. This is why I never have Automatic updates for Windows and then I just pick the ones I want and install them one by one. I know it is a drag, but that way, if there is a problem, I just I know which one has caused the problem and can just avoid that.

                Hm thats a good idea Lyn , but the one big one I had was a vista service pack and in 3 parts but didnt know that at the start of how long it would take, took good 3/4 hour ;;

                  I don't have Vista, so I can't speak from experience, but I have had a look on Annoyances & a couple of other boards and it appears that SP1 is causing problems for some. I would not download it again for a few weeks to give them time to get it sorted.
                  Sounds like the same sort of thing that happened when they first released SP2 for XP.

                      If you are still having problems, I would....if you know which ones they are. I would look for SP1 in the "add & remove progammes" list. Otherwise, system restore would probably be easiest, if you haven't installed anything else.
                      I always make a new restore point & jot down the numbers for the updates before I start....but them I am probably being over cautious! LOL!!
                      Good luck!

                        Sound's like you've all been updating to Vista Service Pack 1. I was not aware there had been problems of this magnitude with it. I only have vista installed on another drive as a testing/learning environment - have not SP1'd it yet. Be interested to try it myself and see what happens. Will let you all know.

                          Oh I hope it's not a similar story when XP SP3 comes out later this year.
