Foreign parts

I have just started on a line I've not bothered with too much before and done the usual of tracking the family down through the census. I've come across a George Butler b 1761 in the 1841 census and it has a tick in the born Scotland/Ireland/Foreign parts box. This is a new one on me as all my lot used to stay in the same county just about. Would foreign parts mean just from another county?

No, foreign parts would mean outside the UK and Ireland I think. People from Ireland or Scotland usually have that written out, and if you are born outside the county it would say "no" in the "where born in same county" column.

Your George says no. There is no tick in the Foreign parts column. There is a tick next to it, but every single person on that page has a similar tick, whether they were born in the county or not.

I think this tick is just done by someone probably tallying up the entries and has no significance at all about George's birthplace.
