I tried to back up the computer now something called OS_TOOLS (E is nearly full & has a red line filling it and HP_RECOVERY (F) has the red line & is nearly full. Don't know what it means or what I've done & son who own the laptop is snorting at me cos he doesn't know either. (off to hide in the kitchen, he wants the laptop back, I'll be back when he's gone to work)

I looks like you've probably saved the backup on the E and/or F drives. This is why those drives are nearly full. You need to go into them and see if the backups files are there (usually quite large) and get rid of them.
EDIT: What backup program did you use?
EDIT2: I'm guessing this is vista based on the red bars you mentioned.Dave - Hungry Monkey

Dave, I don't know which program I used, I can't even remember how I did it, and yes its Vista. ( the devil makes work for idle hands & I should stick to what I know, there again if I don't try, I'll never know)
Theres a file in OS_TOOLS(E) called DAVE-PC and in that theres one called
Backup Set 2008-11-04, is it safe to delete it?
