This, in 1861, includes the area where the family was in 1871
    1861 England Census > Gloucestershire > Westbury on Trym > District 8

But they don't seem to be in exactly the same place - not between the same neighbours - or even in the same Lane.

Could they have died before 1841?

All I can find on Ancestry is John with either an Ann or Hester, none with a Harriet

        Fran

It could be possible, but cant find a death for either of them as yet :(

Not forgetting that Harriet may not have survived.

            Christine

I did think first that John and Ann were the parents of John George, but I went to Hereford family fair at the weekend and brought Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers Vol 1 to 7 and it had John George Christening on there with John and Harriet as parents then when looking though my notes came across Harriet Strong Dimond marrying 30/1/1825 to John Long (from BVIR) then on family search found Harriet Dimond Strong christening 9/2/1806.

I then thought perhaps Harriet died and John remarried to Ann, but as said before can't find a death for Harriet

You could perhaps try checking burial register for Harriet Long, or if you have an idea of parish, looking at the wedding of John and Ann to see if he is listed as a widower.

Nell, this is what I have found so far

                    John Long married Harriet 1825

                    Had son John George 1827

                    possible death Harriet 1838

possible remarry for John, Ann Leakey in 1840

All in the right area, found a john in the 1861 census as a lodger and looking into weather Ann died before this time.

What you've found certainly adds up to a plausible scenario.
