  • Rosenthall - Poland

    Hi everyone

I have come across a louis rosenthall in my OH's tree who came over from Poland between 1860-78.
I have checked the national archives for his papers for citenzenship but can only find a louis rosenthall with papers from 1933.
However the louis i have found does live in yorkshire like mine.

Can anybody suggest where else i can look to find reference for my louis?

Have you tried other spellings of his name, Danny, such as Rosenthal with only one l?

Is he the one married to Ada? If so then in 1901 the census says "Poland Foreign Subject", so it looks as though maybe he didn't actually get British citizenship?

As Rosenthal can be a Jewish surname, maybe JewishGen may have some information?

Although, many Jews who came to this country abandoned their religion in order to escape possible persecution. Worth a look though.

              Thankyou OC

I will take a look, any help is much needed.

Do you think thats why his son changed his name to Rose?

Yes! Although Rose is also a Jewish surname, so maybe he just wanted to anglicise the name.

You could narrow down when he came to England by finding or not - if he is there in 1861 and 1871. Probably changed his name to Rose as it was easier for everyone to spell.
