  • Need assistance to find Emma/Maria Turner

    Hi Everyone

This lady has me really stumped. She is my great Grandmother. She shows up in the 1881 Census married to my Great Grandfather and her details are Maria Turner (maiden name) born 1856 Southwark.

I have looked everywhere and can't find her.

I can't find her in the census prior to this.

I obtained her marriage certificate and it shows her father as being Edward and he was deceased at the time of her marriage.

I have now obtained the birth certificates of her 2 eldest children and they show her name as Emma. She is Maria on everything else and continued to use Maria when she immigrated to Australia.

I am awaiting her death certificate ( has also taken a long time to find) and it appears her mothers name was Emily.

I am trying to find her birth and her parents details.

Any assistance would be more than gratefully received. Even point me in the right direction.

There are obviously lots of sites I don't know about!!

Could this be her in 1871?

Are you sure her 2 eldest children were hers and not a previous wife's?
If you can't find a likely birth or baptism, it might be that Edward Turner was a stepfather, rather than her real father.

Equally, her mother could have died at her birth, and Edward remarried. There are several deaths of Emilies in the right area and timeframe.

Bear in mind that lots of people would have given Southwark as a birthplace on one census, then Newington, Rotherhithe, Bermondsey etc on the next, depending how near the parish borders it may have been.

after Baccus? is almost definitely after banns.
Have you tried checking up on the witnesses? It's possible Harriet Richardson might be a married sister.

                  How do I do that?

I also just had a look at the Army Records of another son and on his papers he put his mother as Mrs. M Gosling and the M was crossed out and substituted with Emma.

All further correspondence with the Army was Emma Gosling.

You'd need to see if you could find Harriet on a census and get her birthplace/date or look for a Turner/Nicholson marriage, though with a large area like Southwark its less easy than if Emma/Maria was born in a rural area.

She certainly seems to have chosen to use two different first names. I am just flummoxed by the fact that there doesn't seem to be a birth, baptism or census entry for her under either name. Which leads me to think that maybe the Turner bit was added later.

                    Mysterious.

I have ordered a death certificate to see what that reveals. Mind you it has taken months to find that. She is a real hard one. Apparently she was not a nice lady. Very scary.

                        Hello all,
One of my great aunts married Maria's son George Edward Gosling.
Great aunt was Florence Amelia Truscott.
I too was trying to find the death reference for Maria, but was advised by the Qld BDM office many years ago that her death was never registered.
We also discovered that the father's name for dad George was given wrong on his death details. Dad's given name verified by his and Maria's marriage certificate and census records.
Maria is not as bad as her daughter Emily Elizabeth/Elizabeth, as she is recorded with either given names when married and on her children's birth details.
This daughter even had to marry 2 hubby's with the same lineage [REVIE], both had died, the first was Andrew in 1907 and buried in Maryborough Qld; the other, James Allan died in Brisbane in 1925.
If anyone knows where she died, I would be very thankful as am trying to finish adding the family details to my computer. Arthur John is another death am wishing to find, last place was in Caloundra.
