  • Lost in 1891

This is the Cheeseman family in 1881 in Hackney, London:
Wm Cheeseman Head Mar 32 Brickr. Labr. Surrey
Margt Cheeseman Wife Mar 26 Midx
Fredk Cheeseman Son Unm 3 Newcastle on Tyne
    Ellen Cheeseman Daur 2 Midx
Wm Cheeseman Son 3 mo Midx

It looks as though William senior died in 1888 age 40 in the district of Pancras.

In 1901 at Stephen Street, St Pancras:
Margaret Cheeseman Head Wid 45 Charwoman London
    James Do Son 15 do
    Margaret Do Daur 13 do

I've found Frederick and William jr in 1891 at the St Pancras School in Watford, Hertfordshire, and James in the Downlands Convalescent Home at Rottingdean, Sussex (nearly all the children there are from London), but I can't find either of the Margarets or Ellen. Can anybody else see them?

I've been told that Frederick's birth certificate gives Margaret's maiden name as Wright and one of the later ones gives it as Flanagan. Could be two different Margarets, but if so I can't see a marriage or death for the first one so I'm thinking she just gave two different maiden names at different times.

Thinking aloud. Well, I'm assuming you have found the June 1884 marriage to Margaret Flanagan, which would make Frederick, Ellen and William either born out of wedlock or another Margarets.

I have the address where William died in 1888 now - 16 Cromer Street, Pancras - but I bet none of them will be there in 1891!

No more Cheesemans on the whole of Cromer St. I imagine Nellie is Ellen and I wonder if Margaret and little Margaret went into the workhouse for a short while perhaps? Or to stay with relatives. Where are they though!!

Isn't Cromer Street somewhere between St. Pancras station and Great Ormond Street? I'm sure I remember the name from when I worked in High Holborn and walked to and from St. Pancras.

Ooh, many many thanks Elaine. Relationship to head of household "friend" - that doesn't come up very often, does it?! I expect the two Margarets may well have been in the workhouse or something, and it could be hard to track them down if their full names aren't given, especially as Margaret senior's birthplace on the other censuses is so vague. I was really hoping Ellen would be with the two Margarets to see what it had for her relationship - stepdaughter or daughter! But at least Ellen being in Cromer Street helps somewhat.
