  • Bridegroom's unusual occupation

Thought I'd share this with you all -

Married at Great Driffield, 19 April 1901:
James Frederick Farnaby and Mary Ann Meek
    groom's occupation - castrator.

(It brought tears to my eyes in the record office, today.)

Have just looked him up in 1901 census - transcribed as James Fornobg (???)
born 1873 in Wawne, resident in Wawne and
YES he WAS, with (vet) added!
I know someone had to do it, but he's the first one of those in my tree.

Ooh Janet!!! Wonder if he used the implement I saw in the museum. They were for use on bulls, bet they hurt!

PLEASE SCAN AT 300-600 DPI FOR RESTORATION PURPOSES. THANK YOU!

All kinds of farm animals could be castrated - pigs, sheep etc. Nasty but presumably necessary.

Yes Nell, I remember it well from my childhood, at lambing time. It was the only time we children weren't allowed in a farm building, and we believed it was because they were all having rubber rings put on their tails, and that was the reason for the squeals!!

Didn't shepherds use their teeth to castrate lambs??

Wouldn't that put you off being dated by the local shepherd?!! pmsl

My parents were both vets - my mum used to castrate cattle! She was very strong in those days! She used to do dehorning too.

Elizabeth, we were kept away from the foldyard and cattlesheds during vets visits too. Although we did hear "noises" and assume the animals weren't as pleased to see the vet as the farmer was, lol.

I suppose we all ought to be grateful that Merry's shepherd wasn't an inseminator lol.
