  • Should this be CORK?

Please could someone have a look at this image?

    HO107; Piece: 1486; Folio: 172; Page: 20

My ancestor is CATHERINE GINN (abt 1806) and her pob is given as 'Cory Ireland.
I don't think there is such a place (yes, I've googled it!) and it should be CORK!

    Thanks
    Alison

      I'm confused
Are you looking on Ancestry 1841 ?

Doesn't it just say Ireland as her place of birth ?

OK I think you're looking on the 1851 census ... it does look like

      Cory

        Hi Christine

Just googled CURY Ireland and this came up

        Cury, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

Seems they have got NI and Cornwall a bit mixed up!

          Hi Rachel

Just copied it again and it is for the 1851

          HO107(?); Piece: 1486; Folio: 172; Page: 20

          The 1841 is

HO107; Piece 686; Book: 5; Civil Parish: St Pancras; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 5B; Folio: 29; Page: 52

Not too sure what's going on here but these are definitely what is down there!

I had presumed it must be 1851...

H107 is the prefix for both 1841 and 1851, but 1841 has a book number as well as a piece number, and (most importantly) 1841 may give a country, but it doesn't give a place.

There's a faint possibility of it being "Ary"* or "Ciry"**.

I tried Google maps, and could only find Cury in Cornwall (South of Helston).

                Christine

PS * found one in KY, USA; or ** Ciry-le-Noble, France

I was thinking that the enumerator couldn't read their writing and the 'K' (in Cork) had been written a 'Y'.

I can see that after a long day tramping about they might make this mistake!

I suppose it depends on who wrote the place name - and whether it was originally in upper or lower case.

It's in lower case on the image, and there's little doubt about it being a y, but if the original had been in upper case, then a Y and a K could look similar.

                      Thanks Christine

I think I'll go with the CORK theory as no-one seems to know of a CORY in Ireland! LOL!

Of course - if it's a Gaelic name, "Cory" might be a phonetic rendition of "Cuaraidh", or something like that.
