  • Ladder Machine?

I came across a couple of previously undiscovered entries for OH's 3xgt grandfather in Oxford in the 1839 Historical Directories today. One is as a Ladder Machine Manufacturer and one as Inventor of the Ladder Machine.

Googling doesn't seem to bring up anything which might relate to a 19th century ladder machine and I wondered if anyone knew what it might have been.

Apart from the above, the man was a barometer and clock dealer/manufacturer, a print seller and an eyeglass and telescope manufacturer - in case those might be relevant.

There's a few references to them in Google Books.

        Thank you James and Libby.

The Google Books Ladder Machine entries mostly relate to dredging machines but there is an illustration of a fire service Ladder Machine of 1833 - a hand-drawn trolley with an extending ladder attached. I have just had an enjoyable virtual tour of the Oxford Museum - one of those detours which makes this hobby so interesting - and think I will send them an e-mail to see if they can provide any further insight. The Oxford Canal had opened in 1790 so perhaps dredging machines were required there.

Those Historical Directories certainly bring out some odd combinations of business interests. Another barometer maker of Oxford, apart from being a jeweller, cutler and silversmith, was an artificial flower and feather manufacturer!
