I came across a couple of previously undiscovered entries for OH's 3xgt grandfather in Oxford in the 1839 Historical Directories today. One is as a Ladder Machine Manufacturer and one as Inventor of the Ladder Machine.
Googling doesn't seem to bring up anything which might relate to a 19th century ladder machine and I wondered if anyone knew what it might have been.
Apart from the above, the man was a barometer and clock dealer/manufacturer, a print seller and an eyeglass and telescope manufacturer - in case those might be relevant.
