  • Oh the tedium!

Trying to find maiden name of William Purvey's wife Ellen. She is aged 28 in 1891 and 34 in 1901 so born between abt 1863 and 1867, in Northleach, Glos.

No Northleach baptisms that late on IGI, there are oodles of Ellens in census and in GRO birth indices between those dates.

I am slowly going through them all and matching them to Jun q 1886, which is when William married (of course there's another couple on the same page of the marriages, but Ellen is absent).

It is so tedious, and all the time I'm thinking "maybe Ellen was a middle name" or "perhaps she was a widow"!

    There's no obvious Ellen mispost:

    GARDINER Ellen Stroud 6a 616

CLISSOLD Isabella Ellen Stroud 6a 565

Unless the retyped GRO pages have an error in them!

And those two both have even numbers of men and women on their pages :(

Annoying, isn't it! I don't want to buy a flipping cert and I don't know for sure where they married, though first child was born Pitchcombe. I guess I can look through parish registers when I next go to LDS in London, but I thought it would be easy. Should have realised, after all William's sister is Ellen (my gt grandma) and he also had a stepsister called Ellen.

          Q2 1886 is only about 96% complete :o

Family relatives would probably be able to help you, but I'm not giving them any more of my money!! lol

while you're both online .... Nell and Merry ......

The Durham/Northumberland/cumberland Bishops' transcripts are great ..... for me.

Do you know if any other counties are on line?

No, quite right. I've only got another 17 Ellens to go through and then I might get desperate!

              Thanks for your help, Merry.

The lying cow! She was born 1860! No wonder I couldn't find her.

Tough luck, I am going to put her correct age in my family tree. What a madam!

Farmington and Northleach are quite close to each other. I wonder if she was baptised at Northleach, sorry just thinking aloud.

She has a brother born after her in Northleach. Who knows! I don't think our ancestors were as bothered about being exact as we are! Thanks for your thoughts.
