I was looking for the marriage of John Alexander Dowie in Newington, Surrey DecQ 1839. On free BMD the page number was shown as 34_ so I checked on Ancestry's full indexes and the page number was unmistakeably 341.

So, I was just wondering - do the free BMD transcribers work from a different set of image scans from the ones shown on Ancestry?

The answer to that Gillian is Yes!

You can always let them know what the correct number is and they will get it changed.

PLEASE SCAN AT 300-600 DPI FOR RESTORATION PURPOSES. THANK YOU!

The FreeBMD images are not as clear as the Ancestry ones. I've just looked at the image for J A Dowie on FreeBMD and, imho, you can read the number ......

But maybe the transcriber had a hard day?

        Thanks Wendy.

Merry - how did you get that image please? I only saw an "info" option next to the result and not an option to view the image.

Thought you might say that!! lol

If you go to FreeBMD Home page and click on View Images, you can then go through a series of selection pages for type of cert, year, Q etc etc, unlit you get a list of all the "D" pages for marriages of Q4 1839. Then you have to guess which would have the name Dowie on it....I guessed right first time.....page 129. Clicked to open it and voila!!

I used to go through this palaver all the time before the GRO stuff was on Ancestry and before FreeBMD had the spectacles, as I was too mean to pay out a separate sub for FindMyPast when the GRO stuff was all they had :(:D

            Thanks for the explanation Merry!

You must have needed an awful lot of patience, and good guessing skills, to use that method! Those like me, who started all this later, don't realise sometimes just how easy we have it.
