  • Oxfordshire baptisms CD?

Does anyone have a CD with Oxfordshire baptisms on?

I am looking for Hook Norton, it isn't on the IGI.

I have a Letter of Administration from the NA site for a Richard WELLS from 1804. It mentions his widow Ann.

The NBI has a Richard WELLS dying in 1804 but no age. There is also an Ann WELLS buried in 1815 age 65, so perhaps that is her.

If they were about the same age that makes him born about 1750.

I have a William WELLS born 1745 so perhaps brothers?

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Margaret

I've had a quick look at the Hook Norton Index for Baptisms. There are none before 1789 listed.

Can confirm your WELLS, Richard - Burial 14 Aug 1804. No other detail.

Burial - 05 Dec 1815, WELLS, Anne, 65, Chipping Norton.

If I can help you further, just ask.

    Mary

        Sorry Margaret,

Just realised my reply was confusing.......I mean't to say......

there are no Baptisms for the WELLS family before 1787.

Do you think it could be a different village?

I don't have time at the moment but if you would like me to look though for anything else I'll see what I can find.

        Mary

I suppose that is very possible.

I have William Wells born about 1745 but he died before the 1841 census.
He married in Hook Norton in 1772 to Elizabeth Freeman.

The family do all seem to be butchers if thats any clue, but perhaps your CD doesn't have occupations.

I have had a look on the BVRI CDs but nothing on there I'm afraid.

I know what you mean, Margaret! It's a lot to spend if it doesn't give you much info.

My son bought me a particularly useful one for my family, and I found it immensely useful. It even made a window in a brick wall for me - i.e. I can deduce a likely parentage for my father's ancestor, but can't prove it. Before the CD, I'd had no idea at all. There are some others which might be seful, but they cover only one of my parishes, not two, as my existing one does (South Newington, and Wigginton).
