  • Charged before the Mayor?

A lad was "charged before the Mayor" in 1894 with having embezzled a small sum of money.

Where would this have been? I imagine it would have been a court of some kind.

I just googled the phrase and it does seem to be some sort of court case.

Probably a bit like a local assizes?

Thanks, Margaret. I have a specific date from a newspaper but need to know where to look in the Record Office.

I'm sure the staff in the record office will be able to help you.

          found this

"The first woman magistrate, Mrs Ada Summers, Mayor of Stalybridge, sitting ex-officio was sworn in on 31 December 1919. At that time Mayors of Boroughs were justices as well as chairmen of borough benches by right of office"
