  • Hertfordshire help??!

I've been doing my second Smith tree and am almost bald!

There's several people who have cropped up in census records with a particular place of birth in Herts. It looks like:

    Bank/bunt-ing-ford/field/ton

    or something like that!

Anyone know what it's supposed to say?

Buntingford! Not my side of the county, but I've driven through it! You will be glad to hear it was also a registration district from 1 Jul 1837-1 Jan 1838. GRO vols VI (6) After that, it was replaced by Royston vol VI (6) to 1851 and then 3a from 1852 -1939 when it was divided between Bishops Stortford and Hitchin (yippee).

The PR's are Layston, so I presume Buntingford is part of Layston??

Never heard of Layston but it is included in Buntingford reg district on Genuki. According to the google map it appears to be a hamlet near Cottered, which is on the road running w-e from Baldock to Buntingford.

                    Hey you all!
Buntingford is MY town - I've lived here for years and love it. Yes, it's in Hertfordshire, yes, it's near Cottered but Layston is part of Buntingford, not the other way around!

                    How can I help.

                      Hi Boadicea,

It was just that two married female non relatives were both born there (one married my rellie). I have looked at four census images before I realised they all said the same place, as I'd never heard of it.

I have since discovered the two ladies were sisters and finding the maiden name of one enabled me to find the marriage entry for the other, to my rellie George SMITH!! lolol

                        Hello,
I am just replying to let you know that there is a place, now, in Herts, called Buntingford, it was, years ago, called Layston. It is near Braughing.
I have been told this on good authority by the Braughing Community Website, another site that you might find help on, they have 'The Chairman of Local History Society, Peter Boylan, on there and he has helped me so much.
