  • Herald Painter

I came across an Oxford marriage on a newspaper site to a Herald Painter. He had died by the time of the 1841 census but the last child was born in the London area.

I was trying to get some general idea about what the occupation involved eg apprenticeship, place of work etc but google seems to be bringing up only specific Herald Painters.

Can anyone recommend a site or book which would give a more general idea please?

I have done a bit of googling, and it seems that one way into the occupation of heraldic painter was through membership of the Painter-Stainers Company.

    In

    IHGS - Latest Acquisitions 2004

    I found this listed.

    "London
London Apprenticeship Registers Volume 38 Painter-Stainers Company 1655, 1666-1800. C Webb (Society of Genealogists 2004)"

Might be worth looking at this to see if your man is listed as an apprentice?

Thank you for searching for it for me Roger.
That looks very interesting and I shall follow it up.
