  • I'm in a tangle

Found an obit yesterday for my 4 x great grandfather George Alfred Hodson.
    died 27 June 1869

In it it states that his funeral was attended by his sister Ellen Hodson, who was also present at his death.

That actually solved a problem as on the 1841 census where he's still living with his father there is a Helen Hodson born c1816 who I'd not successfully been able to place.

All the Hodson's were theatricals, so actors, singers, comedians etc.

George's generation were born Ireland (mostly Dublin) - the family moved to England in the late 1830s following a bankruptcy.

1871 there is an Ellen Hodson, born 1822 Dublin - occupation; Musical.

Lovely - that fits nicely. Can't find her in 1851 or 1861 though.

BIG BUT..... in 1871 she is living with Mayland family.

Wife Lucy Mayland born Dublin c1834

Ellen's relationship is given as sister in law (to William). So Lucy Mayland should be Lucy Hodson.

That's the first I've heard of Lucy and she should be on 1841 with the family as she'd only have been 6!!

    My heads about to explode.

I'm gonna have a cuppa and some toast, but if anyone can untangle me or get me pointed in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

She could have been William Mayland's step sister, perhaps?

Zoe - have you looked at the image. Not sure it is Lucy - could be Mary, although the M is slightly different to others on the page .... and has been transcribed as Mary!

            aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhh

I found her on 1841. Living with another sister Fanny in ST Pancras

and there's yet ANOTHER female - Eliza.

Too young to be the mother. She's 22 which makes her borderline for being an eldest sister as their father was born in 1799.

                            1875 from memory.

There's a possible death for Maud Mary Wayland in 1879 which would make the 1881 correct.

I'm only halfway through 1000+ articles at the minute so I'm hoping I might eventually get to some death notices which give more clues

Would it not be better to look for a Mayland death, rather than a Wayland one!

It's not your day today Zoe!
