  • age check on 61/71 please

Ann Beadle on 1881 census has her birth year as 1843 but I had her down as 1831. She married in 1854 so wondering if they have knocked of 10 years.
She is married to Henry Beadle born about 1831. Living in the Dartford area of Kent.
    Thank you

    1871 says 1841 but 1861 says 1826!
    I'll just check the images

1861 is right, but 1871 is hard to read. I think she's 30 though, which would be 1841.
    Could he have married twice?

I think it might just be a case of her telling a few porkies!

Her year of birth ranges throughout the censuses
      1861 - born 1826
      1871 - born 1841
      1881 - born 1843
      1891 - born 1832

      take your pick!

If his wife is Ann Head, I think she's down in 1851 as 1837. Oh, no she's not. That's a different Ann.

Here's a similar situation with my g-g-mother (AK = Ashton Keynes, Wilts):
            Elizabeth A TAYLOR:
            1851q1 Cricklade 8-343
            1851HO107-1834: age 2 months; AK
1861RG9-1274: age 9, scholar; Derry Fields, AK
1871RG10-1886: age 21, servant; house of Wm Wheatley, Landowner, Turnpike Rd, AK
1881RG11-2017: age 27, cook; house of James E.G. Bradford, 8 High St, Swindon Wilts
            m 20 Mar 1884 Cookham RO, William Charles LANCASTER (b 13 Apr 1863), by Licence, Berks [2c/593] age 26 ;), spinster
            domestic servant; Cookham
            witnesses: I W Godsell & JxW Dance
1891RG12-3fo11p20: age 33, caretaker, 7 Porchester Sq, London
            7 Apr 1892 at 7 Porchester Sq
?1896q2 in Paddington (mother died Paddington)
            1895: not in Porchester Sq
1901RG13-1910fo90p14: age 43, Laundress; 70 Prospect La, Swindon, Wilts
            d 24 Nov 1940 [uncle]
            "Eliza Lancaster" d age 89, 1940q4 Marlbro' 5a-210
bur Swindon [mother] - Ashton Keynes [uncle] -with parents & br William

I deduce that the age gap at the marriage was thought to be a bit large, so she shed a few years in order to seem a bit more respectable; that she maintained this fiction until after the marriage appears to have split (William was lodging in London for 1901, and the informant for his death, in London in 1917, was his sister). That, by the time she died, the informant had a better idea of her real age. (I have yet to buy the B & D certs.)

Yes I had taken it as Ann Head to be his wife. Daughter of Richard Head.
I am about to start searching the records to make certain its the right one.
