  • what would Gilchrist be mistranscribed as?

cant find my Gilchrist family on 1901.
Elizabeth Harriet Gilchrist b 1875 Kent possibly son John William Henry Gilchrist b 1898 Kent.
I think her husband is John Thomas Gilchrist but not yet found their marriage details to confirm this. I found a possible marriage in 1897 making her about 27 when she married which is quite old for my lot.

Do you have a place of birth for Elizabeth - other than just Kent?

If she was born in 1875 then she would have been 22 if she married in 1897

Gilchrist could be mistranscribed as anything! I've found Stevens mistranscribed as Howard - not a single letter the same.

What was Eliabeth's maiden name - have you found her on a previous census that would give a better idea of place of birth?

yes thats her first marriage. At her 2nd marriage there is a John William Henry Gilchrist as a witness so checked his birth and it seems he is her son b 1898

Can;t see likely person on 1901 yet, but this looks like her birth reg, so maybe she was a bit older than expected.

Well it might not be the right birth, its just the only one I can find in Kent for an Elizabeth Harriet Chapman.

Gloryer, Have you tried putting the name Gilchrist in the search box on GR.? That will give you some suggestions as to some possible variants of the name. There is a big list of them! Good luck Lesley

Mm. Can't see any John born 1898 +/- a year in Kent, with either father Thomas or mother Elizabeth.

                              Run out of ideas now!
