                Thanks! Chowns/Chouns/Chawns/Choundes etc

I would like to tidy up my great x 2 grandmother Ann Chowns' siblings.

I've done quite well with them except for

                Maria
                Her baptism:
Maria <Chouns> Christening: 06 MAY 1804 Farnham Royal Bucks
Parents: Robert Chouns & Susanne IGI Batch No.: C145372

Maria was the eldest, and gt gran Ann youngest of children, all baptised Farnham Royal, and family moved before 1819 to Stoke Poges. Not sure if Maria had left home by then, as she is not mentioned in her father's settlement dispute between Aston Rowant and Stoke Poges 1819 Easter Quarter Sessions. Maria would have been 15 and probably working away from home as a domestic servant, or she might have died, though have not found burial record in Farnham Royal or Stoke Poges.

                poss. marriage on IGI
                MARIA CHOUNS Spouse: JOHN GREEN
Marriage: 18 AUG 1822 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London
                Batch No.M040803 Dates: 1813 - 1817

This could be possible. Maria would be 18 and probably moved to London area to find domestic work. Her younger sister Betsy worked as a cook in Marylebone before she married.

Any leads or gleanings would be gratefully received.

Ooh, that's intriguing, thanks. The rellies who have given me most bother are Mary/Marias, I suppose because married women don't have occupations, whereas the many Williams are often easier to disintangle.

I just wish I could find Maria on 1851 census to be sure its her. Of course the baptism entry Maria Susanna might just be the vicar going all Latin for a more prosaic Mary Susan, but as Maria's mother was called Susanna it fits.

I had a look at the IGI last night and there were loads of children with parents John Green and Mary, but I doubt if it would say Mary on the baptism if her name was Maria. Especially if the child's name is given as Maria. I can't really see any particular reason for thinking that one belongs to your John and Maria unless we can find more evidence.

I've found a few children baptised at St Leonard, Shoreditch with parents John and Maria - again, it's pretty tenuous but maybe we can find them on the 1841 census to see if they look likely:
Sarah Green born 18 Sep 1828 baptised 28 Dec 1828
Ann Green born 8 Jun 1832 baptised 26 Dec 1834
William Green born 3 Nov 1834 baptised 26 Dec 1834.

I've found Sarah, Ann and William on the 1841 but their mother isn't there to say if she was born in or out of county:

(that's the ref for William, and the rest are on the previous page)

And I've had a very quick look at the 1851 and it looks as though they are all dispersed by then. Most likely that Maria died before 1841, and very likely before 1837 too, which is going to make it difficult to work out (a) if they are the John Green / Maria Chouns couple, and (b) if she is the same Maria Chouns. I think you will need to check the actual PR entries for the marriage and for those baptisms to see what extra info there is in them. I suppose if you were looking at the parish records then you might be able to find her burial too, to see what her age was when she died. Going to be annoying if you spend that much time on them to find out it's not her, though!

Many thanks. I agree, it would be hard to prove if its the right Maria and just my luck she died before 1841! My heart sank when I saw St Leonards as there are zillions of entries for every day, it was a very densely populated area and only later did they build St John the Baptist to provide for the volume of people.

On the bright side, St Leo Shoreditch is at the Guildhall which is relatively easy for me to get to. Just hope the actual entries do provide extra useful info!

                                Thanks again!

                                  Anyone wanting another challenge

Maria's younger sister Sophia bapt 1816 Farnham Royal, married James Hoar in 1833. The don't appear to have had any children. I have them on censuses 1841, 51, 61 living in Stoke Poges. James died 1866 (reg district Eton) but I can't see what happened to Sophia after 1861.
