I can't find Mary Carrick after these births and was trying to locate her address at the time of the Buchanan baptisms above, in case she was in the same place but under a married name. I read it as Cure but that doesn't show up as an address in the Buchanan 1841. Can anyone suggest an alternative interpretation of the script please?

According to my dictionary on the computer 'Cure' can be 'a Christian minister's pastoral charge or area of responsibility for spiritual ministry' ....
also 'a parish'
Don't know if that's of any help

All the others on the page are married couples and the word following their names is definitely their address so I just assumed the same applied to Mary. However, maybe it was different for illegitimate births/baptisms.Gillian

lol Kate - I discovered the same. The fact that Buchanan is also a surname doesn't help either!Gillian

Does Balfron refer to the place north of Glasgow, or is it a surname?
If it's the place, then is "Cure" actually a placename which could be Cour or Cury or Currie or anything else for which "Cure" would be a phonetic interpretation?

Hi Christine
Balfron refers to the place in Stirling and the baptisms are in the Buchanan register.
I've tried Cur* and , now, cour* but neither matches. The other entries have place names which match their addresses in 1841.
The trouble is, I don't know if I'm looking for Mary McNicol or Mary Carrick. Daniel McNicol, mason, the father, doesn't seem to exist either!Gillian

Hi Raven,
Thanks for that one - I looked at him yesterday and thought it looked as if he was the same one who was a grocer in Campsie by '61. The grocer's wife was Mary Adam according to the Wills and Testaments index on SP.
It might still be the same Daniel - I suppose my only way of finding more about him would be if I could find Kirk Sessions for Buchanan.Gillian

true Gillian...
It sometimes gets a bit complicated before 1855...
Have just checked on IGI and there was a marriage for Mary ADAM and Daniel MCNicol in Campsie 15 May 1835.Last edited by Raven; 04-03-08, 16:09.

I used Multimap, which suggests these:
Currie, Midlothian
Corrie, Isle of Arran
Cour, Argyll
Currarie, Ayrshire
Carie, Perthshire
Cuier, Isle of Barra
plus some others in England and Wales.

Christine - thank you for looking for those. I hadn't even thought of trying Multimap.
I think I'm probably looking for somewhere within Buchanan in Stirlingshire but I haven't come across an OPR quite like this one before so anything/anywhere is possible. I'll check those above out for sightings of Mary Carroick in the census.Gillian
