My son Dave (works in IT) says that the 2nd one is the better one to choose. The extra £100 pounds gives you a big boost in performance and is also more future proof (last longer - ie upgrade to Vista etc) and is also good value for money.

    Hope this helps.

How much will a monitor cost on top of that though? I am just wondering whether you could get a complete kit from PC world or somewhere for a better price? I need to know too as Im going to be in the market for a new one shortly.

What level of aftersales service is provided ?

Is the supplied operating system legitimate, or a 'dodgy' copy which will cause you problem when trying to get windows updates.

The cheapest legitimate copy of windows XP will cost around £50 and legitimte copies of MS office are priced quite steeply. Looking at the prices you have been quoted, it would appear that they are not quite kosher...

Dave says he could do it for that price, all legal copies.

Obviously if you go to some big business they will sting you for a lot more!!!!!

With a legitimate OEM version of Windows XP home it appears to be just about do-able. but it leaves no margin for the builder to make anything on the machine.

To include a legitimate version of MS Office 2003 would add around £60

But this still leaves the question of "What if......."

Yes the big boys charge a bit more, but there is some peace of mind to be had knowing that they will fix it for you if it breaks.

Exactly Heather. If my son were to build a PC for someone he would expect to put it right if it went wrong, just as any big shop would.

You would hope so, all i am saying is to be sure that the warranty is there and is provides cover even if the retailer goes out of business.

Ive always bought from the big boys but this last computer has driven me round the bend and although it had 5 years parts and labour warranty the 1st year on site - its not that easy to actually implement the warranty. They put off and off coming on site in the first year and then didnt repair the hard drive which even I knew was not right. So a week after the 1yr it failed. They refused to come out and back it went for 3 weeks to be changed. This has happened every time it goes back 3 weeks without a puter. At least if the chap were local, you could take it to him and then get on his back every day if it wasnt repaired sharpish?

Tas, Mesh are still getting a lot of bad feedback online re their after sales service - I am tempted to go for a Dell, they have a lot of good offers on at the moment. Have a look at their site. Which report puts Dell in top 3.

                                  And good reviews generally:
