    Hi Raven

At first glance it looked most like Martin to me, but I'm not convinced the second letter is a and not u and the last couple of letters are really faint.

Putting the wildcard Murt* into Ancestry's transcriptions brings up some Murtics, Murtas and Murtiers.

    Not much help I'm afraid!

Update - just had another look and the first letter is nothing like the M of M.S. so scrap all my above suggestions lol

    Burton?

Bust or Must maybe ? (well, maybe not if you think the Ms don't match, but I have seen Bs written like that)

Is it too early to find Janet and John's marriage in freebmd ?

It would be too early Di... It would be in the Scottish OPR's. Will have another go in SP.

        Thanks Gill and Di..

Have found a marriage for John Donaldson and a Janet BART 7 June 1795, in the right area... about the right time...

My first thought was Hurst - but I don't really think the first letter is an "H"

            Not much help, sorry

Initial letter looks like B, but Bust, although that it what it most looks like, seems unlikely.

My first thought was Burt, but now I think Raven's find may be right.

Is it just me who sees two faint letters after the Burt or whatever?

Have had a look at the OPR for the marriage and it is definitely Janet Bart.

The first letter of the surname on the second line looks very similar to the one in question, do you know that persons surname ?

Having now seen quite a few Scottish certs, I would be quite happy to go with Bart, which might REALLY be Burt - pronounced in a thick Scottish accent.

Oops, thought it was a surname. However the W of Weaver does look similar to the capital letter of.....................is it a persons name or job title ?

I must admit though that it does look like a W although I never noticed it until you pointed it out.

Well OH has an Ann Donaldson 4xGreat Grandmother born c1780. Not sure where but her children were born in Ayr.

Then his Great Grandmothers sister (another branch) married a Charles Donaldson who was born in Stirlingshire in 1861.

Then on my own line is 4xGreat Grandmother Jean Donaldson c1811 who married Matthew Hamilton. Again don't know any further back from her but her daughter (my line) was born in Ayr.

Maybe a relationship with OH's line and mine but haven't researched them enough to know.

                                    Not much use eh :D
