  • About the new FTF 'Regions'....

Where does Bristol fit? I've looked on the lists, and as ever, I'm confused! Bristol isn't part of Somerset, nor Gloucestershire - and hasn't been for many a generation, now. So, which Region do Bristol folk link up with to volunteer?

[I don't know if this is the right place to put this query, so do move it if it needs to be somewhere else.]

    Bee.
    Bee~~~fuddled.

    Searching for BANKS, MILLER, MOULTON from Lancs and Cheshire; COX from Staffordshire and Birmingham;
COX, HALL, LAMBDEN, WYNN, from Hants and Berks; SYMES (my mystery g'father!) from anywhere near Bournemouth.

I don't think that the boundaries come into it Pat, the way the map was divided, it just made more sense to do it that way. Otherwise we would have been looking at 53 different Co-ords for ALL the counties of England & Wales. So by sectioning England the way we did, makes it more workable.

Bristol became a City and County in 1373. I remember the 600 year celebrations well.

Areas to the north of the city wall were in Gloucestershire and those to the south were in Somerset. Many of those areas have now been swallowed up by Bristol eg Bedminster (was in Somerset) and Westbury-on-Trym (Glos).

It never was part of gloucestershire and has always regarded itself as being part of the south west.

It's something that Bristolians tend to be very touchy about!!

True enough (I am half a Bristolian! lol).....but from a family hsitory point of view, it's in Gloucestershire for all the censuses currently released, so it makes sense to put it there.....

Sorry - I seem to have started something!

But I feel the same way that Nicky does - alligned with the South-West rather than Gloucestershire (sorry, Glossies!). That's despite the fact that I grew up in North Bristol, right next to the )old) Glos. border.

Elaine - I'm not being lazy by not volunteering, but as you'll be aware (!) I need a lot of guidance - don't feel qualified to 'lead' anyone, yet! :o

Can we pick which direction we alligne ourselves with? Or will we get ticked off? (Apart for the 'black mark' for pore speling, that is!)

Libby - you can ask, as long as you don't have high expectations of my abilities - see above. lol

Sorry these boundaries have caused a few problems.

When the counties were set up in the wiki the SCAD team had to decide how it was to be done and they chose the historical boundaries - which are the same ones we are using for the regional project.

From our point of view you don't have to attach yourself to any region in particular, unless of course you are a co-ordinator. All we want are photos of churches. If you take some of Bristol then once they are snagged by Julie they will be added to the wiki under the county of Gloucestershire - as you can see on the following page

There are many other areas throughout England where the boundaries/counties have changed over time but as I said, a decision had to be made early on and the chosen method was to follow the historical format.

So come on you Bristolians - get out there with your cameras ...... please!

Sorry - I know it'll be on the site somewhere, but I get lost every time I venture into 'The Wikki'!! Can you give me directions?
