  • Can anybody read William's surname, please?

An OPR birth entry from Edinburgh 1743 - what do you think William's surname is? (He is one of the witnesses and his occupation is stabler.)

      I'd say Geddes

he's been a bit fancy with the second D for some reason

very very Scottish name is Geddes - I worked with at least 4 when I was up there

That's what I thought, Wendy, but it doesn't seem to be a name, but I think Zoe has got it right because there is a William Geddes, stabler, in the roll of Edinburgh burgesses. Thanks, Zoe!

I'd go with Geddes also. I had come across the name before.

Geddes is a famous name in Edinburgh history - google Patrick Geddes
Researching Harris, Mason, Murray, Dickson and Denovan in Scotland, Drury and Brady in Ireland, and Boothby, Gower, Waghorn, Blyth and Humphrey in England.
