  • Bastardy Orders Cumberland Archives

just discovered that you can search the catalogue at Cumbrian Archives.

They've got quite a good selection of Bastardy Orders, with name of mother & father.

In the Any text box, put Bastardy & the surname, then for Word Options click the And box.

Hopefully you'll get a list with blue numbers, if you click that, you'll get the details & names.

Couldn't find any of my Thompsons...but maybe you'll have some luck!

    Louise,

Did you put in the surname? I've just been searching under the general term of 'bastardy', and there are a lot with no title, but you can still find details under the blue numbers.

Or maybe try it with the parish name instead of surname

yes, Helen...put in the surname....lots of Thompsons...none of them mine ( I've got 5 believe it or not!!).
The blue numbers had me fooled at first until I clicked on them.

I've lots of families in Cumbria. I've been trying all the surnames and all the place names - not one hit. My family are so boring!
