  • Help reading occupation please

I just cannot make out the occupation of John Carrick, head of household number 19 in the Canadian 1901 census.

Thanks Heather - I was seeing the last letter as a d but I think you're right.

The birth dates are really useful for confirming IDs. Even when they sometimes get their year wrong, the day and month are usually correct.

I wondered whether the bit at the end, with the d, might be an enumeration addition? In which case the occupation could be Farmer or Farrier?

After another look, I think it's the same as most of the other rows where the occupation is specified - they all look like Farmer, except for the one on line 13, which could be Farrier - or could be Farmer with a speck on the page!

... and I think that it says he was Presb(yterian). A lot of the rest seem to be Cath R.

Thanks Christine. Yes, it was the Scotch and Presb which made me think he might be one of "my" Ontario Carricks. Most so far have been either farmers, or in the lumber business. I was a bit thrown by the fact that there was a tick in the employee box but also in the living on own means box but one or both of those may be accidental marks.
