I used to think only birth and marriage certs were worth shelling out for. But I've just got a cert for a distant rellie, Octavius Gray. I knew he had been a fisherman's boy and assumed that as he'd died aged 22 he'd been in a fishing accident, especially as my father had told me some rellies had died in an accident at sea.
But I just got his death cert and he had heart disease. His occupation was "policeman at Holt, Norfolk" so I not only know he changed his occupation and became a copper, like a lot of the Grays, including his son (now I know why) I also know where he was stationed.
And just to help me know I have the right chap (he was baptised as Octavian) the death was registered by a lady with the same surname as Occy's wife's maiden name.
