  • Poor little Ann Angus

I have just had a couple of death certificates which I hoped would help me sort out my Anguses. I don't think they do, but one of them really tugged at my heart strings. I have had some unpleasant causes of death before but I just can't get this one out of my mind.
It's in 1841 , at an inn in Carlisle, and for an Ann Angus, maidservant aged nineteen.
Cause of death is ''suicide by poison in a fit of insanity''
Who knows why she was so troubled, and how alone and desperate she must have felt.
God rest her, the poor lamb. I just wanted to acknowledge her existence after all these years

Poor girl. Maybe she was pregnant? Poison was a popular method of suicide and murder.

    RIP Ann Angus.

          Poor Ann......

She was a servant at the Royal Hotel, Carlisle on the 1841 census.

Golly Merry, thanks for the quick work, I was thinking of looking her up tonight... Do you have the ref to hand, if not don't worry I'll seek her out myself

She's listed aged 15 (rounded down)

HO107; Piece 175; Book: 1; Civil Parish: St Cuthbert; County: Cumberland; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 17; Page: 29; Line: 12

There's an inn nextdoor...the White Hart.

Thanks so much, Merry, I will go and look at her...

Later : I must have walked past that spot (English Street area)when I was in Carlisle this summer.
The cert says she died at the Gleaners Arms, Old something Court..
Maybe she got sacked from the Grand Hotel. Or was just hiding in the other place...

Found this in a listing of old pubs in Carlisle:

                    Gleaner, Old Grapes Lane

There must have been, Nell. The cert was signed by a William Carrick, Coroner, Brampton 4th Oct 1841

So maybe the reason why would be in a newspaper report of the inquest?

Just checked Cultrans and the Longtown news site, nothing on there. I don't suppose she'd rate a bit in the Times, even if I had access now ..
Maybe something for when I'm over in the UK, they have the Carlisle newspapers at the library, if I remember correctly
Must thank everyone for their interest, this is making me feel a bit better about her ( there were some pretty gruesome inquest reports that were there. It's a cruel world at times)
