  • big botch up somewhere?..help needed

hi...can someone please tell me where i have gone wrong please...(certain this info was from 1871 census in glossop)
james williamson b 1831 hyde chesh
    margery(maiden name kay) b 1827 penistone yorkshire
    charles b 1844 glossop
    charlotte b 1851 glossop(my gg grandmother)
    thomas b 1853 glossop
    selina b 1857 glossop
    sarah b 1862 glossop
    james b 1867 glossop
    zipporah b 1867 glossop
something wrong here, this would make james 13 when charles was born..
i suppose charles could have been margerys child (she would have been 17 when charles was born)...could someone point out my mistake please..regards...allan

Allan, did you look at the image or just use ancestry's transcription? If it's from their transcription then it could well be wrong.

So, the years of birth that you gave us in the beginning do match what you get from various censuses. James may well have knocked a few years off his age for the 1881 census, and / or Charles could well be Margery's son from a previous relationship.

Perhaps Charles Kay was illegitimate and Margery Kay not married before.

                            See IGI entry:

Sorry Allan...that is out of my field...never looked for a birth at a workhouse...never even looked at a workhouse site, so I don't even know what might be found on one.

But what makes you think that she was born in the workhouse?
