  • Help with a marriage.

    Hi,

I am searching for a marriage for my gr gr uncle. Robert Russell b1838

In 1861 he is living in Edinburgh with his elder sister Catherine and her husband as well as his two brothers William and James.
( 55 Rosemount Buildings, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian).

Then in 1871 he is at Howick Village, Howick Northumberland with his wife Margaret. Her maiden name is Lewis.

The only marriage I can find for a Robert Russell and Margaret Lewis is:
    1864 2nd Quarter Robert Russell St.Geo. H. Sq. 1a 478

Can anyone find anything else?? I have checked Scotland's People but no luck there...

    Thank you...

      Nell,
Their eldest daughter Catherine Margaret Russell was born

1871 Dec qtr Alnwick Northumberland, Vol 10b 319.
Iam presuming the address is Howick Village, Howick same as I have for their other daughter Jane Lewis Russell b 1876.

I expect you've found Catherine's baptism on IGI, batch no. C024465 on 15 Oct 1871 at Howick.

So she was probably born around end of Sep/beginning of Oct, to be registered in final q of 1871. I would guess marriage probably in 1870, but can't find anything as yet.

Also on that batch, just if you haven't got it already, baptism to Robert & Margaret Russell at Howick:

CATHERINE MARGARET RUSSELL 15 OCT 1871
          2. JANE LEWIS RUSSELL 15 OCT 1876
          3. ROBERT ALEXANDER RUSSELL 14 APR 1878
          4. EDWARD JAMES RUSSELL 09 MAY 1880

Curious that Catherine and Jane share same baptism date!

It also seems a big gap between Catherine and Jane. Wonder if they had any more that died?

                What was Roberts occ Anne?

is it possible he was in/around London as part of his Job?

i'd be tempted to send for that cert with a ref check ? If you know Roberts dad that is, or Margarets?

Julie he started off as a joiner (1861 Census), Clerk of Works on 1871,1881 and 1891 and on 1901 he refused to fill it in..... On Jane's Birth Cert and on his wife Margaret's death cert his occ is Architect and on Jane's marriage cert it is Gentleman.

Architect and gentleman sound rather grand. I know St George's Hanover Square was posh. Of course the reg district would include more churches than just that one.

Nell his father was an Ag Lab in Peeblesshire.

His BIL was a builder and Clerk of Works in Yorkshire. So I was wondering if his potential was seen and he was offered an apprenticeship somewhere.. I might just order that marriage and see what happens.

I ordered the cert for Robert Russell and Margaret Lewis 1864 June Qtr vol1a pg 478

It was the right one... His occupation was Joiner as per the 1861 Census, His father was William Russell, a Steward. Margaret's father was John Lewis, a Gardener. Her sister Jane Lewis was one of the witnesses..
