  • Where now!!

    Hi all,

Have a Hugh Brownlie b1835. Lanarkshire.

This is him on 1841 cen with parents..

Piece: SCT1841/644 Place: Gorbals -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 34

Civil Parish: Gorbals Folio: 34 Page: 6

    Address: Richard Court

It says on both parents James + Flora Brownlie, born out of county.

I cant find them on the 1851 cen.

And no birth for Hugh Brownlie!

How do i find where his parents came from (no marriage).

    Thanks

Have you looked to see if they died after 1855? I know you can't find them on the 1851, but just in case they are on it but hiding...

Oh, and if Hugh died after 1855 in Scotland, then his death cert should tell you Flora's maiden name.

Probably his stepmother, or maybe Flora was her nickname, or the person who registered his death got it wrong.

1841 census doesn't give relationships, so Flora could be his stepmother?

              Thanks for your replies.

I think I have found Hugh Brownlie with his father James Brownlie on 1851 cen........with another wife!!

I found it on SP but its not on Ancestry........Why would this be?

Ancestry is by no means perfect....he is probably there disguised as Ethel Peabody or some such.

As OC has hinted, the Ancestry transcriptions of Scottish censuses are like the curate's egg, excellent in parts. The SP transcription is more uniformly reliable. The Ancestry transcribers had a tussle with Scottish names (places and people).
