  • Installing FTM 2006 - OVER 2005, or separately? Help!!

I've plucked up courage to try and install the 2006 version which has been staring at me accusingly :( from it's box since it arrived on Saturday!

But when I put the CD in, it's asking me if I want to install it over 2005, which will overwrite it. Is that what I want? I've got the 205 file saved on 3 1/2" floppy, so is it safe? Or will I loose all the stuff I've entered??

    Help - I need some hand-holding and reassurance! :o

    Elaine? Heather? Anyone who knows?

    Bee.

You can safely install it over 2005.
However, I would recommend that you back up your current Family Tree Maker file (which will end in a ftw extension) - although it sounds as if you already have this in hand.

Thanks, Elaine. I'll try it now.

I'll either be back squealing in panic, or be gone for weeks, playing with my new 'toy'!

(I have this fantasy that you're just waiting on line constantly to help me out! So reassuring! Though I know you do actually have a life. But thanks.)

Blimey, Heather! You must be joking! Looks far too 'grownup' for me! :o

And what do you mean 'when' I get all my stuff on 2006 - I don't think I'll ever get to that point. :( I'm still finding new info, and haven't even looked at putting photos etc on. (Not that I have many.)

But thanks for the encouragement! And the 'vote of confidence'!

(You obviously haven't seen my lastest interrogation of poor Elaine!)

Bee. (With tidy desktop - thanks Elaine!)

Heather is not joking - you have no idea how easy it is to do a home page.

When you have all your files nicely tidied up and are ready to go then just shout and we will have your home page up and running within 10 minutes.
It can easily be updated as and when you add new info so no excuses.

Bee, as Elaine says, its easy peasy - get your info onto FTM2006 and then just click internet tab and then create home page - thats about it really, few more clicks and its done.

I update my homepage every time I add photos or information - just click a few buttons and its done.

When you say a home page do you mean a web page that everyone can read? If so how safe is your family tree surely people can help themselves to all your hard work.

Sorry that I don't quite understand these things.

Where can I buy a 'Bargain' update programme for my FTM the version that I have at present is Who do you thin you are! FTM 2005 (PCCD - GSP). I purchased it from TWR.

Margaret, I don't know much about this 'home page' thingy - as you'll have gathered - but I got my FTM 2006 from play.com for £5.99, free delivery, on Heather's recommendation.

It's fine, loaded easily despite my phobia about technical stuff, and is working ok. I've not used all it's features so I can't see the extent of the improvements yet, but adding info to the 'facts ppage' and 'notes' seems more streamlined.

I've also downloaded the free Charting Companion' - brave of me, I know! - and that's useful, though I'm having a bit of a problem with scrolling through the names on there. But the internet help on there is really helpful.

                  Good luck!

Guys, your homepage can be password locked - that is, only those you invite can see it or you can leave it open to anyone who googles for a name on it. I did leave mine open and Ive had several very good contacts through it. But if you dont want that, just keep it for friends and rellies to view from their puters anywhere in the world. Its much easier to understand than just a tree.

If you want you can have a look at mine - Elaine and Glen and some of the others have much better ones with even video clips, but mine suffices. Click on my name above my avatar and then click on public profile and you will get the link to my homepage.

Heather - how do you lock a FTM home page?

                      :o

Bee & Heather, Thank you for your replies, I think that I will update my FTM and hope that it works with vista. I keep thinking of changing to an AppleMac but that is in the future because of getting programmes for it.
Heather, Thank you for letting me view your home page I am very impressed. At the present time I only have a handful of names on my tree but have volumes on paper. I think it will be along time before I have a web page.

Elaine, you dont "lock" it( perhaps that was a misleading word to use, I was trying to reassure people), you just dont make it available to google searches. If you just do your home page from scratch then the option is just to keep it to yourself or to invite people to view it. You have a list come up and you add peoples names and email addies to it then they are sent invites - I and Glen added ours to google search for everyone to be able to view.

Yes - I registered my url with google as well.

Sorry, been out with dogs - what I meant I guess was by default it is private - its up to you if you want to make it public.

Rosie, it took about 6 weeks I think before google picked it up. You can also add it to Cyndi's list. I use my hotmail addy for contacts as that is so good at filtering porn and so on and I have to say that Ive only had genuine people contact me through it.

Oh it's months since I registered with Google and Cyndi's, and I have got a hit counter so I know people look at it. Just that nobody has contacted me through it yet:(

I use Statcounter - it's really good because you can view a map of the world which highlights where your visitors are from.
