  • Are John & Joseph brothers?

I have received the death certificate for John Latton who died in Shap, Westmorland, in 1867, aged 76. The death was registered by Agnes Latton.
Looking at the 1861 census the most likely Agnes is married to Joseph Latton.

John & Joseph both have their place of birth as Glassonby, Cumberland - John abt 1791 and Joseph abt 1796.
I haven't been able to trace John Latton any further back - Glassonby doesn't have its own parish. Do you think it likely that John & Joseph are brothers?

Joseph married Agnes in 1842, so I should be able to get the certificate and hopefully get a father's name.

    Thanks for looking
    Helen

It's certainly a plausible explanation that there's some relationship there, and "brother" is the most likely, I'd have thought. Without anything definitive to back it up, though, it's only a theory.

What's the IGI like for that area? Or the local FHS? What kinds of records do the local Archives/RO have? Are there any Local History websites which might come up with the goods?

According to my local library all the parish records for the area that is now Cumbria are on the IGI - but I know they aren't.
Shap comes under Kendal, and Glassonby will probably be Penrith.

There is a Joseph Latton baptised in Dec 1794 at Renwick, which is about 5 miles from Glassonby - not the parish Glassonby is in, but its close.

Have found them now - putting LATTON in to the IGI doesn't give me the alternatives of LATTIN & LATTAN, which is what the family are under in Addingham parish - John, Joseph & a 3rd brother Richard.

          Brilliant!

That's so rewarding, when you beat the system!

I discovered that the Joseph baptised at Renwick in 1794 was still there on the censuses, so couldn't be who I was looking for.
I went on Hugh Wallis and searched the batches for Renwick and Kirkoswald looking for different spellings before I did Addingham. Good job they're small hamlets.
Now I have John's parents (will probably get Joseph's marriage cert to confirm) and his father's as well.
