  • Have you lost anyone in Notts circa 1819? May do for Leics. too

I was just having a last-minute forage on The Times archive and found this when looking for something else.
It's dated Sept 7th 1819 and concerns the problems of the frame work knitters in the county
    It says
''The Duke of Newcastle cannot leave Nottingham without expressing his deep regret at being unable to devise any legal means of adjusting the differences betweeen the workmen and thier employers in the hosiery business; but having received applications which make it appear that colonisation of the Cape of Good Hope would prove a desirable object to many, the Duke wishes to acquaint the workmen that he will afford the measure every facility in his power, either by giving them personal information or by convening the country to take the matter into consideration...''
    Hope this helps

Rod Neep has written a really interesting article about migration of Nottingham Frame Work Knitters to South Africa. I hope he doesn't mind but here is the link
