  • The Elusive Henrietta Hodson

My 4 x great grandmother is Henrietta Elizabeth Hodson nee Noel born c1810 in Marylebone

I know some of you have come across her before as I've had help previously but I sat down tonight determined to find her in teh census and I can't find her on some and one I have found is just throwing up more questions

    Her known children are:

    Henrietta Ellen born 1841
    Kate Caroline born 1842
    Sylvia born 1846

I'm fine on all these as they're well documented.

    1841 - HO107; Piece 1057; Book: 5; Page: 31;

    1851 - can't find her

    1861 - got her

1869 - Husband George Alfred Hodosn died in Bath (where he managed a theatre)

    1871: RG10; Piece: 175; Folio: 48; Page: 16

she gives her age as 49 and she has a surprise daughter called Laura aged 21 born London. I can't find her at all anywhere else.
But I also can't find Sylvia in this census.

Sylvia was an actress who travelled around a lot so could be anywhere. She married in 1875

1881 can't find Henrietta at all

    1891 RG12; Piece: 472; Folio 153; Page 12

I think she is down as H H aged aged 77 a patient in the Peckham House asylum in Camberwell. birthplace not known.
This fits with her 1892 death certificate although neither the death cert or the census give an occupation so I can't be sure either is her

Can anyone spot her in the other census?

Or figure out whether Laura/Sylvia are the same or different people.

    Thanks for looking

Sorry not having any luck at all. Perhaps Sylvia had a stage name or was on tour abroad in 1871?

Have you found birth registrations for Sylvia and/or Laura?

That's it. Not one I've ordered yet as she's a bit of a side line and the family are so nomadic that addresses tend not to be of any use if they're more than a year old.

Zoe, when you say you can't find Henrietta in 1851, is it just her you can't find or the whole family?

I can't find any of them in 1851 at all

            George Alfred Hodson c1822 Ireland
            Henrietta Elizabeth Hodson c1810 Marylebone
Henrietta Ellen Hodson 1841, Upper Marsh Lambeth Surrey
Kate Caroline hodson 19 Jun 1842 Marylebone (taken from parish record - no birth registered)
            Sylvia Hodson 1846
            ?? Laura Hodson ?? 1849 London

also missing is George's family who had all moved over form Ireland - but Ill save that for another plea

I have to go to bed as I"m up at 6am tomorrow so I'm not intending to be rude if I don't reply again tonight

Sorry Zoe, I've had a shufti round 1851 this morning without success. Either they'd left the country or they are on a really faint, badly written page and have all been totally mistranscribed - or maybe they are in one of the missing pieces (if there are any in 1851)

Just what I was going to say, Nell. Maybe they'll turn up when findmypast does the 1851.

Thanks for trying both of you.

At least I know I'm not missing the obvious

It's no consolation, but I think most of us have elusive people on one census or another. I have a chap who is in the same place 1871 and 1891 but awol in 1881.

Even more depressing, husband's London lot are in missing pieces 1841 and 1861 (the very years I need to sort out family mysteries) so there is no chance of ever finding them!

I have about 60 of my Linksons missing from 1861 as they are in the missing chunk of Islington. It's a shame as I know exactly where they are living as all the Mrs Linksons were popping out endless babies between the 1851 and 1871 and I have certs for 1861.
